St George-Illawarra Dragons fans face a dismal record of nine games without a win, a points differential of -185, and just two points on the board. The club organizes a member forum where supporters can confront the leadership directly about the poor season.
Quickly Filled Forum Signals Fan Frustration
Management issued an email invitation last Friday at 1:04 p.m., featuring CEO Tim Watsford, COO Ben Creagh, and head coach Dean Young. Demand surged, with capacity reached in just 39 minutes, prompting a follow-up email.
Leaders anticipate intense questions. CEO Tim Watsford acknowledged the potential heat, stating, “Absolutely. Our fans are up and about and rightly so. We might get a few curly ones, absolutely, but we wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t front up.”
He added, “If there are bullets fired at us, some of it is probably misjudged, some of it judged. Our fan base is passionate and we haven’t had success for a while. That’s not a pass mark in anyone’s books and I’m not shying away from that.”
Strict Rules: Adults Only, No Filming or Streaming
The invitation specifies the event suits adults only, excluding children. Watsford confirmed it as an “adult event” and ruled out online streaming for non-attendees.
Recording remains prohibited to maintain an in-house atmosphere. Watsford explained, “We want to try and keep it very much in-house. That’s the way we want to do it from an exclusivity perspective. I do like to speak transparently and openly and there is trust there.”
He emphasized direct communication: “We want our messaging directly from my lips and Ben Creagh will be up there with me as well. Where we are going will be the key topic.”
Addressing Recruitment and Path Forward
Watsford welcomes fan input on recruitment issues and commits to improvements. “Fans want answers, they want to win and I can’t argue with that,” he said. “My job is to fix it.”
The CEO highlighted the club’s passion: “The beauty of this club, especially in tough times at the moment, is we have plenty of opinions and passion within our fan base and we want to be as open as possible.”
Recent efforts include head coach Dean Young’s initiative for eight-hour player workdays to shift culture. Results lag, however, with the Dragons conceding 106 points across losses to the Newcastle Knights and Sydney Roosters. The winless run now spans 13 matches.
